What the World Will be Like in the Era of Internet of Things.

How many objects do you have that are connected to the Internet? About a decade ago you would probably say – one or two if you were early adopter of smartphone technology. But today you`ve got a work computer, a personal computer, a tablet, a smartphone, a video game console, a media player, a smart TV, etc. Now extend this trend outworld and what do we get?

By some estimations by 2020 there will be 50 billion of objects connected to the Internet. It`s also estimated by US Census Bureau  there will 7.6 billion people alive at the time. So that means that for every person there will be 6.6 objects connected to the Internet. We`re talking about world blanketed with billions of sensors. These sensors are taking information from real physical objects in the world and uploading it to the Internet. Its a world were your environment transforms as you walk through it because the technology that you may even not aware of is monitoring your every move. Its a world that constantly changing all around us due to these sensors and the Internet and we call it the Internet of Things.

Internet of Things (IoT) is an evolution of mobile, home and embedded applications that are being connected to the Internet integrating greater computing capabilities and using data analytics to track meaningful information.


To make your life smarter Internet gave soul to innumerous things such as gadgets and wearables etc, These embedded computing devices are interconnected uniquely in the existing Internet infrastructure. It acts as the nervous system connecting anything with everything on the Earth. Sensors are fitted everywhere collecting real-time data consistently. Every device has its unique ID, which makes the communication possible among them. This is machine to machine communication(M2M).

Maybe you wonder if it is possible to assign address to all the devices in the world…The answer is “Yes” due to the IPv6 protocol. IPv6 has a huge address space of 2pow128. It will assign power to each and every atom in our world.
Tons of data collected from all devices all over the world. Where could we store this huge sum of data and how do we analyze it? Cloud is the solution. This is the reason why many companies started to provide limited cloud space for free of cost. We will hang on their back soon. Next part is analytics. This process is called DIKW(Data – Information – Knowledge – Wisdom).

As a result systems will become more efficient and smarter. Intelligent decisions will be taken by machines without human interventions. Human inventions should make the humanity stronger and smarter. There is no doubt that IoT will create a huge impact in our society.

The Internet of Things is changing much about the world we live in from the way we drive to how we make purchases and even how we get energy for our homes.Sophisticated sensors and chips are embedded in the physical thing that surround us, each transmitting valuable data. Data will let us better understand how the things work and work toghether. But how exactly do these devices share such large quantity of data and how do we put this information to work?  Whether we`re improving the production of a factory, giving city residents real time updates where to park, or monitoring our personal health – its the common Internet of Things platform that brings this divorce information toghether and provide the common language for the devices and apps to communicate with each other.
The process starts with the devices themselves which securily communicate with the Internet of Things platform. This platform integrates the data from many devices and applies analytics to share the most valuable data with applications that address industry specific needs.

Internet of Things Examples

Let`s start with a simple example – car. Imagine that after taking a long roadtrip you notice that your check engine light is turned on. You know that you need to have a car looked up by mechanic, but you`re not sure whether it`s something minor or something that needs immediate attantion. As it turns out the sensor that triggered the check engine light monitors the pressure in the break line. This sensor is one of the many monitoring processes around the car, which are constantly communicating with each other. A component in the car called the diagnostic pass gathers the data from all these sensors then passes them to a gateway in the car. The gateway integrates and sorts the data from the sensors. This way only the most valuable diagnostic information will be transmitted to the manufacturer`s platform. But before sending this organized data the car`s gateway and platform must first register with each other confirming secure communication. The platform is constantly gathering and storing thousands of bits of information from your car and hundreds of thousans of cars like yours building a historical record and a secure database. The manufacturer is adding rules and logic to the platform so when a car sends the signal that a break fluid has dropped below a recommended level the platform triggers an alert in the car. The manufacturer also uses this platform to create and application that solve specific issues. In this case the manufacturer can deploy an application on the platfrom called the asset management system. This application oversees all the customers` cars on the road as well as all the parts in their warehouses. It uses the data from your car to offer you a potential appointment time to service the car, directions to the nearest certified dealer and the coupon for the service. What`s more – the app ensures that your breaks are covered by your warranty, that the correct replacement part is ordered and then sent to the dealership so that it is ready when you arrive.

But the manufacturers analysis does not stop there. They`ve also deployed the continuos engineering application that tracks hundreds of thousand of cars, looking for ways to improve the design and manufacturing process of the car itself. If the same problem in the break line crops in the critical number of other cars the manufacturer uses application custom build for the automobile industry to pinpoint the exact problem. They can see if these cars were made at the same factory, use the same parts or came off the assembly line on the same day. So what do all of these pieces add up to – streamlined inventory management for the dealer, a better safeguard car for the manufacturer and for you it means you can be back on the road faster and get to where you were going safely. All thanks to the Internet of Things.

Let`s now look into the living room of the Future. Now immediately this room identifies you and taps into the cloud based profile a preferences like climate control, music, lighting and decor. Had a long day at work? The room knows based on the calendar app on your phone, bio sensors that detect the stress by your blood pressure and the heart rate. So it turns off the rock music you usually listen to and switched to a more suitable classical music. From environmental sensors outside it may be even warned within your clothing itself. It knows it was snowing earlier so the climate control begins to increase heating.


Now on the software side we`re talking about algorytms that are so sophisticated that they may predict what you want before you even know you wanted it. So when you walk to the refrigerator it tells you not only what in there, it tells you what you can make with the stuff you already have. And it tells you what`s inside and what`s the perfect meal based upon your mood, activity level and maybe even your weight loss plan. As for how many objects could be connected to the Internet we consider this – the latest version of the Internet protocol – IPV 6 creates more potential addresses than there atoms on the surface of the Earth. So we gonna live in the world completely filled with the sensors, with data reacting to us, changing every moment depending upon our needs. It is altering reality as we know it. And its all regulated by the Internet of Things.
